Early in my career, I witnessed a product discussion that stayed with me.
A senior colleague made a remarkably candid observation:
“When something becomes harder to compare, it becomes harder for the customer to question the price.”
That sentence changed how I read financial products.
Not every complicated product is bad.
But complexity is never something I want to ignore.
Why does complexity matter?
Because it can make three things difficult:
Comparison
Can you compare this product with another?
Cost
Can you see what you are actually paying?
Risk
Can you understand what can happen in a bad outcome?
If the answer is no, slow down.
Complexity can have legitimate reasons
Some financial problems genuinely require sophisticated structures.
Businesses may need hedging.
Large estates may require specialist planning.
Certain investors may have specialised needs.
The point is not:
simple = good, complex = bad.
The point is:
complexity should earn its place.
Ask what the complexity does for you
This is the question I recommend:
“What does this additional complexity give me that a simpler alternative cannot?”
If there is a clear answer, investigate it.
If there isn’t, ask more questions.
Decision Room
A product has five additional features.
The salesperson explains all five.
You still don’t understand the core economics.
You have three options:
A. Sign because the salesperson sounds confident.
B. Walk away immediately.
C. Ask for a simple explanation of cost, risk, return, liquidity and exit before deciding.
The third approach gives you information without prematurely making the decision for you.
The lesson
Financial sophistication is not knowing the longest product brochure.
It is knowing which parts actually matter.
