Should You Pay a Financial Advisor? Absolutely — But For What?

A family once asked me:

“Why should we pay someone for financial advice? Everything is available online.”

Fair question.

But I asked them to remember one particular market fall.

They had nearly sold their long-term investments in panic.

The information was available online then too.

What they needed was not more information.

They needed someone to help them think clearly.

That is where professional advice can have value.

Advice and products are not the same thing

There is a major distinction between:

paying for advice

and

buying a financial product from someone who happens to give advice.

An advisor may provide value through:

– goal planning
– portfolio construction
– risk assessment
– tax coordination with specialists
– retirement planning
– behavioural discipline
– reviewing major financial decisions

Ask how the professional is compensated

This is one of the simplest questions you can ask:

“How are you paid?”

And then:

“Does your compensation change depending on what you recommend?”

The answer matters because incentives matter.

Not everyone needs an advisor

If you are starting a simple emergency fund or learning how SIPs work, you may be able to do much of the groundwork yourself.

But when the financial situation becomes complicated, the cost of a wrong decision can become far greater than the cost of competent advice.

Decision Room

You need help.

A. Choose someone because a friend recommended them.

B. Choose someone because they promise superior returns.

C. Understand their role, qualifications where relevant, compensation, conflicts and scope of service before engaging them.

The third is a better starting process because it evaluates the service rather than the sales pitch.

The lesson

Good advice can be worth paying for.

But don’t pay blindly.

Pay for clarity, process, accountability and expertise—not simply for access to a product.
