Why Simplicity Can Beat Complexity in Investing

Early in my career, I watched someone get excited about a financial product with an impressive brochure, multiple features and a payout structure that required a calculator just to explain.

The product sounded sophisticated.

The person selling it sounded sophisticated.

The customer felt sophisticated.

Years later, the most important question remained:

Did the complexity actually create better value for the investor?

That question has stayed with me.

Complexity isn’t automatically value

A complex product can be perfectly legitimate.

Some financial problems genuinely require sophisticated solutions.

But complexity can also make comparison difficult.

And when comparison becomes difficult, the buyer can struggle to answer basic questions:

What am I paying?

What risk am I taking?

What do I receive?

What happens if I exit?

The simplicity test

Before buying an investment, explain it in two sentences:

How does it make money?

What can make me lose money?

If you cannot answer either, stop.

Don’t feel embarrassed.

Ask more questions.

Complexity often increases behavioural risk

The harder an investment is to understand, the easier it can become to:

– ignore fees
– misunderstand risk
– focus on illustrations
– follow someone else’s confidence
– stay invested simply because exiting feels complicated

Decision Room

You have two investments with similar objectives.

One is simple enough to understand.

The other has multiple layers of fees, conditions and assumptions.

Don’t automatically choose the simple one.

Instead ask:

“What does the complexity buy me?”

If the answer is clear and valuable, it may be justified.

If the answer is vague, investigate further.

The lesson

Simple investing isn’t about being unsophisticated.

It is about making sure sophistication serves your objective, not someone else’s sales pitch.
